Our objectives are 1) to encourage the use of seismometers and earthquakes in order to enhance the teaching of earth science, computer science, physics and related sciences, 2) to increase the seismic monitoring of local earthquakes in Georgia and the southeastern United States and 3) help educate the general public on earthquakes and earthquake hazard. 

 

Below, you will find tools for recording and studying earthquakes.  These include teaching exercises, descriptions of seismometers you can purchase or make, and an explanation for earthquakes in and near Georgia.  We also include answers to common questions about seismology and earthquakes.

 
An illustrated tutorial on seismometers for teaching and fun
  • This is the place to look if you want to purchase or make a seismometer.  For those handy at making things, we include instructions for the construction of amateur seismometers and recording systems. If you want to purchase a professional quality instrument, we provide a guide to available low-cost systems.  For entertainment, we offer a history of seismic recording and some theory on the construction and calibration of seismometers.

 
Teaching Exercises.
  • Do you want to use seismometers to help in teaching earth science, physics, computer applications?  The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, at Georgia Tech, has offered a special topics course in preparing exercises for teaching.  Other exercises have been prepared with support from IRIS.  These are presented here for you to use as ideas for classroom instruction.
